How to cancel BT

A quick, up-to-date guide to cancelling BT — and keeping proof that you did, in case you're charged anyway.

Before you click cancel: the moment you cancel is exactly when proof matters. CancelProof records your cancellation — the pages, the clicks, the confirmation — so if BT bills you after you cancel, you have a refund pack ready. Add to Chrome — Free

Cancel BT in 5 steps

  1. Sign in to My BT at bt.com, or prepare to call BT on 0800 800 150.
  2. Cancelling BT Broadband, Phone, or TV is generally done by phone (or their online contact flow).
  3. Give the required 30 days' notice; your service and billing continue through it.
  4. If you're within your minimum term, ask about early-termination charges.
  5. Return any BT equipment (hub, TV box) when asked, to avoid non-return fees. Get a cancellation reference.

What happens after you cancel

BT requires 30 days' notice, so you're billed through the notice period, and early-termination charges may apply within a minimum term. Return equipment promptly. If switching providers, the new provider can sometimes handle the switch. Keep your cancellation reference.

Subscribed through Apple, Google, or another provider?

BT bills you directly. There's no app-store subscription — cancellation goes through BT by phone or online.

Charged after cancelling BT?

It happens more than it should. If a charge lands after you cancelled, here's how to get your money back from BT — and why documented proof is what makes the difference.

Frequently asked questions

Will BT charge me after I cancel?
It shouldn't. After you cancel, BT keeps your access until the end of the billing period you've already paid for, then stops billing. If a charge still appears, see our guide on being charged after cancelling BT.
Does cancelling BT delete my account?
No. Cancelling stops future billing but usually keeps your account so you can return later. Deleting your account is a separate action in BT's settings.
How do I know my BT cancellation worked?
Look for a cancellation confirmation email from BT and check that your account shows the plan ending. Keeping that confirmation — an email or a screenshot — is your proof if there's ever a dispute.
