Cancel Microsoft 365 in 6 steps

  1. Sign in with your Microsoft account at account.microsoft.com and open Services & subscriptions.
  2. Find your Microsoft 365 subscription and select Manage (it may show as Manage subscription or Upgrade or Cancel).
  3. Select Cancel subscription (or Turn off recurring billing if you want to keep access until the period ends).
  4. Review the details in the Please review section.
  5. Choose I don't want my subscription and follow the prompts to confirm.
  6. Keep the cancellation confirmation email from Microsoft as proof.

What happens after you cancel

If you turn off recurring billing, Microsoft 365 keeps working until the end of your paid period; if you cancel outright you may get a prorated refund. Once the subscription lapses, the apps enter read-only or reduced-functionality mode - you can open and print files but not create or edit them. Your OneDrive storage drops to the free 5 GB, and if you are over that limit you cannot upload, edit, or sync new files. After about 6 months, Microsoft may delete files that remain over the free limit, so back up your data.

Subscribed through Apple, Google, or another provider?

You can only cancel through Microsoft's account portal if you bought directly from Microsoft. If you subscribed through the Apple App Store or Google Play, you must cancel and request refunds through those stores. If you bought from a retailer such as Amazon, Best Buy, or another partner or bundle, contact that seller directly to manage billing and cancellation.

Charged after cancelling Microsoft 365?

It happens more than it should. If a charge lands after you cancelled, here's how to get your money back from Microsoft 365 — and why documented proof is what makes the difference.

Frequently asked questions

Will Microsoft 365 charge me after I cancel?
It shouldn't. After you cancel, Microsoft 365 keeps your access until the end of the billing period you've already paid for, then stops billing. If a charge still appears, see our guide on being charged after cancelling Microsoft 365.
Does cancelling Microsoft 365 delete my account?
No. Cancelling stops future billing but usually keeps your account so you can return later. Deleting your account is a separate action in Microsoft 365's settings.
How do I know my Microsoft 365 cancellation worked?
Look for a cancellation confirmation email from Microsoft 365 and check that your account shows the plan ending. Keeping that confirmation — an email or a screenshot — is your proof if there's ever a dispute.
