How to cancel Shopify

A quick, up-to-date guide to cancelling Shopify — and keeping proof that you did, in case you're charged anyway.

Before you click cancel: the moment you cancel is exactly when proof matters. CancelProof records your cancellation — the pages, the clicks, the confirmation — so if Shopify bills you after you cancel, you have a refund pack ready. Add to Chrome — Free

Cancel Shopify in 5 steps

  1. Sign in to your Shopify admin at admin.shopify.com (the store owner must do this).
  2. Go to 'Settings' → 'Plan'.
  3. Select 'Deactivate store' / 'Cancel subscription' and follow the prompts.
  4. Export any data (orders, customers, products) you want to keep first.
  5. Get a cancellation confirmation and keep it.

What happens after you cancel

Deactivating cancels the subscription and takes your store offline; you're billed any outstanding charges up to that point. Shopify bills in advance and generally doesn't refund the current period, so cancel before your billing date. You can pause instead of fully cancelling on some plans.

Subscribed through Apple, Google, or another provider?

Shopify is billed through your Shopify admin. If you subscribed to the Shopify app via an app store, manage that there.

Charged after cancelling Shopify?

It happens more than it should. If a charge lands after you cancelled, here's how to get your money back from Shopify — and why documented proof is what makes the difference.

Frequently asked questions

Will Shopify charge me after I cancel?
It shouldn't. After you cancel, Shopify keeps your access until the end of the billing period you've already paid for, then stops billing. If a charge still appears, see our guide on being charged after cancelling Shopify.
Does cancelling Shopify delete my account?
No. Cancelling stops future billing but usually keeps your account so you can return later. Deleting your account is a separate action in Shopify's settings.
How do I know my Shopify cancellation worked?
Look for a cancellation confirmation email from Shopify and check that your account shows the plan ending. Keeping that confirmation — an email or a screenshot — is your proof if there's ever a dispute.

Cancelling something? Keep the proof.
