How to cancel Xbox Game Pass

A quick, up-to-date guide to cancelling Xbox Game Pass — and keeping proof that you did, in case you're charged anyway.

Before you click cancel: the moment you cancel is exactly when proof matters. CancelProof records your cancellation — the pages, the clicks, the confirmation — so if Xbox Game Pass bills you after you cancel, you have a refund pack ready. Get notified at launch

Cancel Xbox Game Pass in 6 steps

  1. Sign in with your Microsoft account at account.microsoft.com/services (use the same account you play on).
  2. Find Xbox Game Pass in your list of services and subscriptions.
  3. Click Manage next to it.
  4. Select Cancel subscription (or Turn off recurring billing to keep access until the paid period ends).
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts, decline any offers, and confirm to finish cancelling.
  6. Keep the confirmation email and note the coverage end date shown on screen as proof.

What happens after you cancel

If you turn off recurring billing or cancel, you can keep playing until your current subscription period expires, after which Game Pass will not renew and you lose access to the Game Pass library, cloud gaming and member discounts. Games you installed through Game Pass become unplayable unless you own them or resubscribe, though your saved progress is retained. Depending on your country and plan length you may qualify for a prorated refund, which Microsoft handles separately through its refund process.

Subscribed through Apple, Google, or another provider?

These steps only work for subscriptions billed by Microsoft. If you bought Game Pass through the Apple App Store, Google Play, Amazon, PayPal, or as part of a bundle from another retailer, you must cancel through that provider instead - it will not show a Cancel option in your Microsoft account. Cancel Apple-billed plans under Settings > Subscriptions, Google Play plans under Play Store > Subscriptions, and PayPal-billed plans by cancelling the automatic payment agreement in PayPal. Prepaid codes simply expire and do not auto-renew.

Charged after cancelling Xbox Game Pass?

It happens more than it should. If a charge lands after you cancelled, here's how to get your money back from Xbox Game Pass — and why documented proof is what makes the difference.

Frequently asked questions

Will Xbox Game Pass charge me after I cancel?
It shouldn't. After you cancel, Xbox Game Pass keeps your access until the end of the billing period you've already paid for, then stops billing. If a charge still appears, see our guide on being charged after cancelling Xbox Game Pass.
Does cancelling Xbox Game Pass delete my account?
No. Cancelling stops future billing but usually keeps your account so you can return later. Deleting your account is a separate action in Xbox Game Pass's settings.
How do I know my Xbox Game Pass cancellation worked?
Look for a cancellation confirmation email from Xbox Game Pass and check that your account shows the plan ending. Keeping that confirmation — an email or a screenshot — is your proof if there's ever a dispute.
